Cybersecurity Awareness Month

We love October. Not because of the Halloween Candy. Or the pumpkin spice. And, it has nothing to do with the Thanksgiving turkey either. October in the Tech World is something different. For us, it is Cybersecurity Awareness Month! The campaign runs from October 1-31 and is an international effort, to promote, inform and educate about… you guessed it… cybersecurity!

Life Happens Online

This year, the theme for Cybersecurity Awareness Month is “Life Happens Online”. And there is a very good reason why. These days, (especially for the last 2 years) the internet has become a big part of our life. Thanks to the internet, our world has kept going through a global pandemic. Online, businesses found ways to keep operating. We were able to stay connected to the friends and family. We work online… study online… shop online. So, the threat online has never been greater!

Breaking It Down

With so much of what we do being online, just thinking about all the ways you need to stay safe, can overwhelm you. But you don’t need to get overwhelmed. The Government of Canada have put together a fantastic Get Cybersafe website, with loads of info and resources. Plus, the Get CyberSafe Campaign is even breaking things up into bite-size chunks, with a separate focus for each week of Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Week 1 is focusing on staying safe while being social. Info includes how to avoid phishing scams and protecting your login information.

Week 2 is all about keeping files safe. This week will focus on how to store your files safely, as well as sharing them.

Week 3 will be focused on the dangers of working remotely.

And finally, week 4 of Cybersecurity Awareness Month will deal with 2 particular groups that have had the biggest challenges to deal with over the past year or so. They are kids and small / medium sized businesses.

Of course, as your local business tech providers and support specialists we will also be adding tips to our social feeds all month. Also, if you are in the BC Fraser Valley and concerned about your business’ cybersecurity, you are also welcome to contact us! We would be happy to take a look at where you can be more cyber safe. Happy Cybersecurity Awareness Month!
